REDLANDS Blanche Lee knows she s in good hands, which makes her life that much easier. The retired teacher and secretary from Loma Linda is not worried about living alone, because in a way she isn t completely alone.
Around her neck is a waterproof pendant adorned with a red button.
She s a click away from help, anywhere in the privacy of her own home. Lee was fortunate to have known David Joreteg, of Yucaipa, whose father was her cardiologist. Joreteg, she said, is Prada Bags also a close friend of her grandson. Joreteg, 23, recently launched a business in Redlands called Response Link.
His company connects clients to a monitoring center that allows people like Lee to interact with operators who can access her situation and dispatch the appropriate response.
"If a client were to fall, or they think that someone s on their property, they can just activate Response Link and someone can help them," Joreteg said. "It gives them the comfort of living in their own house and prevents them from spending upwards of $1,500 to live in a retirement facility." Response Link utilizes speaker technology similar to that used in monitoring the U.S. Mint, according to Joreteg. A wall-mounted speaker monitored by operators based in Orlando, Fla., can be activated by pressing a button on the pendant.
"Ninety-nine percent of seniors live in a small house," according to Joreteg, who explained that the speaker is centrally located and can be heard and spoken to from anywhere in most people s homes. "I feel safer having something like this," said Lee, "and my family feels more comfortable having me with this. We ve been looking for something like this, and it just happens that I Thomas sabo charms knew David. His father was my husband s cardiologist, and he s been my cardiologist."
Lee said that she hasn t had to use Response Link s services yet, but has "accidentally activated it twice," because the pendant around her neck was too low on her neck and the button was pressed.
"Very quickly I had a loud voice asking, Are you alright Blanche? " Lee said. "I was startled because I didn t realize I had pressed it." She said that Joreteg had personally stopped by to adjust the pendant for her.
Joreteg, who graduated in December from California State University, San Bernardino, was looking to run a business in which he could help people. A couple of months ago he purchased a franchise for Response Link. "There are no other personal emergency response systems" locally available, according to Joreteg.
He acknowledged that there are other companies with similar services that he competes with.
"With most companies you ll purchase their equipment over the phone or the Internet, and people have to install it themselves," said Joreteg. "The difference with Response Link is that I go install it myself within 24 hours, and they don t have to worry about waiting for it in the mail."
He s also been trained to assess falling hazards in the homes where he installs Response Link systems.
"Falls happen because of common things," Joreteg said. "Loose carpets, (missing) nonskid surfaces in tubs. This is not just a fall detection company, it s a fall prevention company."
Response Link can also be used to remind clients, who subscribe to the service for a monthly fee, to take their medications, medications, or to get a wake-up call.
