Cherries have their pick as Ro

2010-11-09 10:25:42

THE most positive aspects of Tranmere's start to the new season remain a mystery to the majority of supporters who do not travel further than Prenton Park to watch their football. However much encouragement fans might take from reports and comments about the performances at Walsall and Huddersfield over the last fortnight, the evidence of their own eyes painted a disappointing picture on Saturday.

Rovers, narrowly beaten by a more efficient Oldham Athletic team on the opening day of the League One campaign, were second best by a more emphatic margin this time.

All of the organisation and composure that earned Les Parry's team a Carling Cup win at the Bescot Stadium and a merited point at the Galpharm peeled away in the time it took to boot a mlb jerseys wholesale ball from one end of the pitch to the other.

Michael Symes' long clearance out of defence on eight minutes went straight down the middle and found Tranmere's covering defenders out of position. Once the pacey Josh Mc-Quoid raced past John Welsh, he had a clear run into the Tranmere penalty area and guided a low shot under the body of advancing goalkeeper Joe Collister. The home side, strong and bright during the first eight minutes, lost confidence and cohesion very quickly after that. Tranmere soon surrendered a second goal, a penalty converted by striker Symes 10 minutes later. From that point onwards, they were a team chasing a lost cause.

Very little went right Rovers, no matter how hard they tried. A brief surge, sparked by a change of formation at half-time from 4-3- 3 to 4-4-2, ran out of steam after the visitors added a third goal through Mark Pugh on 61 minutes.

Rovers were unconvincing where they had looked assured against the Saddlers and the Terriers. Teenager Collister endured a couple of anxious episodes when the communication with the defenders in front of him was not what it should have been. The back four had a centre soft enough for the visitors' quick front men to pierce on several occasions. When Tranmere attempted to step on to the offensive, their passing and movement lacked penetration to trouble the Cherries' defence.

It would be easy to rush to the judgement that the 4-3-3 system, while suited to the cagey, counter attacking game Tranmere play away from home, is less effective when they attempt to take the initiative at Prenton christian louboutin shoes Park. But the fact remains the 4-3-3 set up delivered the 10 home wins Rovers posted under Les Parry last season and provided the bulk of the points that kept them safe from relegation.

Bournemouth played 4-4-2 while storming out of League Two last season. Their leading scorer, Brett Pitman, was tying up a move to Bristol City over the weekend but home-produced talent McQuoid served notice that he is capable of being a good replacement. "Who needs Pitman?" Bournemouth's modest contingent of travelling fans sang after the second goal hit the net on 17 minutes.

The penalty followed an interchange around the edge of the Rovers box in which McQuoid turned away from Wood and set up Symes, who was ready to shoot when felled by Ian Goodison's lunging tackle. Symes then sent Collister the wrong way with his spot kick.

Tranmere could not offer a significant threat until centre forward Enoch Showumni back headed a cross from Aaron Cresswell wide of the right hand post on 37 minutes.

A Sexy and the City Surprise E

2010-11-08 13:07:38

VERONICA'S VIEW

The numbers came thundering in; following the clink and clank of stiletto heels, or Manolo Blahnik's to be precise. The movie "Sexy and the City" (SATC) touched down with the velocity of a comet. And gal pals from Los Angeles to New York City and every point between herded into theaters everywhere to see what the quintessential quartet was wearing, daring, and doing since we last saw them within the confines of the silver box four years Evening dress ago. I was one of those women who took in the chick flick of the decade. My girl friend followed suit as well. I went to see the movie in the relative calm, sparsely attended AMC Magic Johnson Theater in South Los Angeles. My girl friend headed to Hollywood to see the movie at the snooty Arclight Theater. It was sheer pandemonium there with throngs of women in attendance dressed up like their favorite love-lorn characters Carrie, Amanda, Charlotte and Samantha. She text message me that she was sipping a Como in the lobby of the theater bar before the show began. Her message said, "This is the ultimate girls night out, Ronni. You should be here." I wish I had been there too, darn it. We met for a drink after the movie to debrief. And besides, I was craving a Como, the cocktail whose popularity soared because it was the drink of choice of the SATC girls.

She was a bit solemn and not her usually spirited self I didn't want to tune into her malaise because I was still basking in the afterglow of the big screen extravaganza. But much like Carrie's friends in the movie, I circled the proverbial wagon around my friend and gave her entree to bare her soul in a safe, nurturing space. She said despite the antique thomas sabo charm movie's bumpy happy ending, she doesn't see a happily ever after ending with her ten-year long love interest. The similarities between Carrie's ten-year, on again, off again turbulent relationship with the character "Big" had troublesome similarities to her relationship. She said, "We'd all like to believe if we hang in there despite the pain, heart ache, disappointment and humiliation we foolishly endure in the pursuit of love, he will one day have a light bulb moment and realize that we are 'the one.' "Tears welled up in her eyes as she spoke with outward composure and a stoic grace. "Carrie got her man after ten long years," she said with a furrowed brow. I nodded with the soften eyes of a friend and said, "That's Hollywood sweetie. But in real life we have to think from the end, and if we don't like what we see, it's up to us to change the script." "Ten years is a lot to invest in any commodity without a reasonable return," she sighed in a moment of cerebral cognition. "Indeed it is," I replied. "Perhaps at some point we all have to realize that when his actions make it crystal clear he was not ready or willing to say, "I do" - maybe, just maybe it's time for us to say adieu." She thanked me for what she called "sage" and supportive words. We bid each other adieu. It was gratifying to know that I said something to help her in this difficult moment. I smiled as I got Embroidered patches in my car, buckled my seat belt and turned on the engine. As I glanced in the rear view mirror to back out of the parking space, I looked squarely into my eyes - actually beyond them. I saw what she saw as I looked at my story. The words I had spoken to her were pinging in my head. I heard my own words as if they were audibly spoken to me. Perhaps its time for me take my own advice. Perhaps it's time for me to say adieu, too. (If you have comments about Veronica' View email them to )

A day for diamonds and Manolos

2010-11-06 16:07:22

Byline: Turia Tellwright on a day when what people were wearing was as important as the horses

MRS Patrick Fahey is a very lucky lady. Yesterday, her husband's Soul City won EUR1,000,000. Excluding the colt's E88,000 price tag, training fees and other inconveniences, that's the equivalent of around 1,900 pairs of Manolo Blahniks or 95 Boodles diamond rings, both of which were up for grabs at the Curragh yesterday.

In fact, if you wanted to land the Parknasilla Goffs Million races, it would have helped if callaway x24 irons your horse was trained by Richard Hannon. He tightened his stranglehold on juvenile races, Soul City being his 79th two-year-old winner of the season.

But the day was not just about Hannon, it was also about style. Fashion befriended racing in a one-off special, and the two walked hand in hand across the Curragh with enviable panache. As Hermes joined Dublin fashion mecca Brown Thomas and Sloane jeweller Boodles in supporting the Goffs Millions day, what people were wearing was just as important as the horses.

The number of Dublin yuppies gracing the track, each vying for one of the lamourous prizes on offer, suggests the sport is once again becoming 'the' place to be seen.

However, a liberating evolution has taken place in the interim, indicated by the Burger King banner situated in the parade ring.

The panel of judges weaved their way through the crowds hunting down a best-dressed man. According to judge and designer Robert Tateossian, what they were looking for were "well-groomed" men.

"I'm delighted men are taking the lead today," he said. "For once, the women are the accessories."

Fellow judge and former Bond girl Alison Doody, an avid racing fan, was also impressed by the turnout. "I've seen some lovely men - lots of younger guys who are fashion conscious.

"It's good to see guys who realise it's okay to be slightly vain," she explained.

With this in mind, few eyebrows were raised when Zac, a student, was proclaimed the day's best-dressed.

Explaining his choice of outfit, he said: "This is the only suit I have in Dublin, and pink's my favourite colour." FURTHER down the grandstand, nestled behind a sea of bookies' umbrellas, a more informal atmosphere presided. As the burlesque bodices were diluted by tracksuits, the horses regained their status as the day's primary attraction.

In Britain, racing is described as the sport of kings; at the Curragh it's the sport of the people. The owners of the runners in the Goffs Millions may have been vying for life changing prize-money, but that did not detract from the atmosphere. It was perhaps therefore appropriate that Michael Pescod and Justin Dowley, who together have had just seven winners in the last five seasons, took the Fillies' Million with Minor Vamp.

A palpable sense of anticipation could be felt in the Brown Thomas pavilion in the build-up to the 'Best Accessorised Lady' final. A much-coveted pair of Manolos were at stake - the holy grail of shoes - immortalised by Carrie Bradshaw in Sex And The City.

Onlookers stared incredulously as 'accessories' were taken to a whole new level. One woman took the day's theme a little too literally, holding a crop in her leather-clad palm. Another 'accessorised' with breeches and tight leather riding boots.

The Manolos went to Eimear from Meath, who was
