A sentimental journey

2010-11-08 13:07:36

There's a sense of nostalgia for the comfort of yesteryear, and the 1940s World War II Ball brings that time to life, complete with the "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B." From the big band to the balloon drop and conga line, the "Greatest Generation? is celebrated on a grand scale.

The USO-style show was such a hit last year that it's coming to the Boulder Airport titleist irons again beginning at 7 p.m. June 19. Step into Hollywood's TBM Avenger and enjoy a night of dancing with vintage planes, military vehicles, a World War II tank and the Hot Tomatoes, a nine-piece 1940s big band under the nose of a World War II bomber.

Re-enactors playing Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland and Andrews Sisters Act Reveille 3 will be dropped off during the show by a World War II plane, and the red carpet will be rolled out under spotlights for their arrival.

Brandy Dew and the Frequent Flyers Aerial Dance Company St. Louis Rams jerseys will be performing 1940s swing-style aerialist acts from the hangar ceiling - one act actually on a plane propeller dance apparatus hung from the roof. Swing dancers will heat up the dance floor under a canopy of movie set lights, while cigarette girls hand out rations.

Have your photo taken with World War II planes, military vehicles and re-enactors, compliments of the Colorado Military Vehicle Collectors and Wings Over the Rockies Museum. Stop by the Tango Tango Club tent or the Cantina Tiki Tent, enter the 1940s costume contest and dance the night away in a conga line.

To top the night Air force one low off in grand style, the "end of the war? will be announced with an authentic 1940s radio announcement, complete with a balloon drop and celebration.

Add low World War II plane fly-bys in the early evening, a skydive jump with a giant American flag, swing lessons, burlesque, 1940s film projections on the hangar wall, plane rides, hors d?oeuvres, wine and champagne, and you've got the makings for a memorable summer night at the Boulder Airport.

A day for diamonds and Manolos

2010-11-06 16:07:22

Byline: Turia Tellwright on a day when what people were wearing was as important as the horses

MRS Patrick Fahey is a very lucky lady. Yesterday, her husband's Soul City won EUR1,000,000. Excluding the colt's E88,000 price tag, training fees and other inconveniences, that's the equivalent of around 1,900 pairs of Manolo Blahniks or 95 Boodles diamond rings, both of which were up for grabs at the Curragh yesterday.

In fact, if you wanted to land the Parknasilla Goffs Million races, it would have helped if callaway x24 irons your horse was trained by Richard Hannon. He tightened his stranglehold on juvenile races, Soul City being his 79th two-year-old winner of the season.

But the day was not just about Hannon, it was also about style. Fashion befriended racing in a one-off special, and the two walked hand in hand across the Curragh with enviable panache. As Hermes joined Dublin fashion mecca Brown Thomas and Sloane jeweller Boodles in supporting the Goffs Millions day, what people were wearing was just as important as the horses.

The number of Dublin yuppies gracing the track, each vying for one of the lamourous prizes on offer, suggests the sport is once again becoming 'the' place to be seen.

However, a liberating evolution has taken place in the interim, indicated by the Burger King banner situated in the parade ring.

The panel of judges weaved their way through the crowds hunting down a best-dressed man. According to judge and designer Robert Tateossian, what they were looking for were "well-groomed" men.

"I'm delighted men are taking the lead today," he said. "For once, the women are the accessories."

Fellow judge and former Bond girl Alison Doody, an avid racing fan, was also impressed by the turnout. "I've seen some lovely men - lots of younger guys who are fashion conscious.

"It's good to see guys who realise it's okay to be slightly vain," she explained.

With this in mind, few eyebrows were raised when Zac, a student, was proclaimed the day's best-dressed.

Explaining his choice of outfit, he said: "This is the only suit I have in Dublin, and pink's my favourite colour." FURTHER down the grandstand, nestled behind a sea of bookies' umbrellas, a more informal atmosphere presided. As the burlesque bodices were diluted by tracksuits, the horses regained their status as the day's primary attraction.

In Britain, racing is described as the sport of kings; at the Curragh it's the sport of the people. The owners of the runners in the Goffs Millions may have been vying for life changing prize-money, but that did not detract from the atmosphere. It was perhaps therefore appropriate that Michael Pescod and Justin Dowley, who together have had just seven winners in the last five seasons, took the Fillies' Million with Minor Vamp.

A palpable sense of anticipation could be felt in the Brown Thomas pavilion in the build-up to the 'Best Accessorised Lady' final. A much-coveted pair of Manolos were at stake - the holy grail of shoes - immortalised by Carrie Bradshaw in Sex And The City.

Onlookers stared incredulously as 'accessories' were taken to a whole new level. One woman took the day's theme a little too literally, holding a crop in her leather-clad palm. Another 'accessorised' with breeches and tight leather riding boots.

The Manolos went to Eimear from Meath, who was

Bikembergs Clothes There's no Henry Higgins refinement about Eliza Cummings. The 19- year-old model of the moment, who has already been on the covers of i-D, Dazed & Confused and Italian Vogue, wanders around London in boys' clothes, spends her days offplaying football in Battersea Park, prefers sleeping in tents to smart hotels and, should she grow tired of pouting for the camera, wants to be the next Gordon Ramsay, bossing her way around a sweaty, testosterone-soaked kitchen.

'I'm quite Gothic; I dress a bit like Beetlejuice,' she says in strong, south-ofthe-river Cockney. At 14, she dropped out of school after being bullied: 'I got my head cut open and stuff, so I said to myself, "No, I don't need this," and I left.' While her contemporaries were studying for their GCSEs, she lugged bricks on a building site for her stepfather, before training to be a hairdresser at Toni & Guy. 'It was really bitchy and I said to myself, "No, I'm not doing that either." ' At the time, her mother was studying photography at the London College of Fashion and showed her tutor Eliza's photo. 'He said: "Take her to an agency," and she dragged me to Select. I'd already been scouted a

Born, not made; the entrepreneurial personality.

Tiffany Rings

Fisher, James L. and James V. Koch.

HB615

Are successful entrepreneurs made not born? Fisher and Koch report findings from a recent study of 234 CEOs, funded by the Kauffman Foundation, Michele Watch which suggests that a substantial proportion of entrepreneurial behavior is genetically determined--that entrepreneurs are usually born, not made. They consider various aspects of the characteristics of entrepreneurs--their roles as risk-takers and change agents, internationalists and novelty seekers; entrepreneurial management and leadership style; relationships with their boards--and then discuss how the information might be used by organizations, corporations, and individuals to get the right people into jobs requiring an entrepreneurial bent. Fisher is the author of numerous journal articles and author or editor of ten books, including The Power of the Presidency which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize; Koch (Old Dominion U.) has published numerous articles and nine books.
