Micronics Gets Molecular Diagn

2010-11-18 09:56:28

Micronics, Inc., a development-stage company, announced that the Department of Defense has awarded the company an Applied Research and Technology Development Award under the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command's Polytrauma and Blast Injury project for advancement of its PanNAT system for point-of-care molecular diagnosis of infectious pathogens.

The Company said that in the U.S. Army Medical Research and Material Command's Broad Area Announcement, the Armed Forces expressed interest in medical technology to develop a highly accurate, rapid assay device for detecting bloodborne pathogens. The device needed would have a higher degree of sensitivity than existing equipment and provide instant results, while being durable and fully functional in field testing to withstand wartime conditions.

According to a release, in response, the PanNAT technology represents a significant advance over current nucleic acid-based assay systems, which are complex, expensive and can take several hours or days. Micronics' PanNAT system is a sample-to-answer device; the lightweight, portable instrument processes a cartridge into which all reagents are incorporated for rapid disease detection. The award will advance the development of assays on the compact, WiFi-enabled, mains and/or battery-powered PanNAT instrument for the direct detection of multiple bloodborne pathogens in fresh blood samples. The specific pathogens to be detected are those Fiorentina for hepatitis B and C (HBV, HCV), as well as the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The assay is intended for use in the battlefield to screen out any infectious blood donated for transfusion.

Micronics noted that it has already begun work on the three-year project that began on September 30, 2010. The award funds a collaborative effort lead by Micronics' chief scientific officer, John Gerdes, PhD, together with Wei Mei Ching, PhD/Senior Scientist, of the Naval Medical Research Command in Silver Spring, Maryland, and John D. Scott, MD/Professor, of the Hepatitis and Liver Clinic at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington.

The goal of the Defense Medical Research and Development Program (DMRDP) is to advance the state of medical science in those areas of most pressing need and relevance to today's battlefield experience.

Power of the purse

2010-11-17 10:07:56

Restrictions may make it difficult for civil servants to run for public office while employed by the commonwealth, but that's not the only reason they rarely enter the three-ringed political circus. Granted, the reasons could be as plentiful as a bag of popcorn, but one that is undeniable and touches every candidate no matter their choice of work or background: money. Name recognition is a distant second.

Given the three retirements of longtime state House representatives, Bob Belfanti, Merle Phillips and Russ Fairchild, the race for all three seats in their respective districts is as wide open as it will ever be. All hopefuls vying to represent their party in the upcoming November general election have coordinated social events to meet and perhaps even engage in political discourse with their future constituents, but more importantly to raise much needed campaign funds.

An old-time political hack once confided that in order to successfully run for any elected office, "you have to be a good earner." If I didn't know any better, I would have thought he was talking about a more nefarious candidacy in Replica Barbarabui Handbags another "organization," this one a bit more clandestine, but in some instances as equally cut-throat.

The task of raising money is such a huge part of the political landscape that for newcomers it can be a bit overwhelming. Thanks to our campaign-finance laws, fundraising is the single most important job of today's political hopeful. Failing to do so guarantees failure. Cash for all its intent and purpose is name recognition in lights. Like the faces of the American patriots they display, money and name recognition are two sums of the same political equation that cannot be ignored nor cancelled out.

There is no sidestepping this permanent fixture of political gymnastics, provided you are serious about public office. Money is the cotton candy of any campaign, and as any dedicated campaign worker will bemoan, there never seems to be enough.

No money equals no newspaper ads, no homepage, no signage, no radio and no cable; summarized simply, goodbye name recognition. And given the three local house seats have no incumbent running, a simple thing like name recognition becomes campaign calculus. To master it, one doesn't have to be Newton or Leibniz, but a "good earner" who knows the definition of political muscle: money. Anonymity in these races is a cost that no political hopeful can afford.

History schools us time and again that whoever raises the most cash will more than likely emerge the winner. Thus, taking center ring in any serious campaign is the fundraiser. Case-in-point: the present primary race for Pennsylvania governor. Gubernatorial candidates state Attorney General Tom Corbett, a balenciaga Bags Replica Republican, has raised a little over $4 million while Democrat and Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato has pulled down $6.7 million. None of the other candidates aren't even close to earning their first million. Such a quandary, if you can label it as such, hoists them on the high wire without a net and the wind swirling.

Given the recent ruling by the Supreme Court, the problem is too much corporate money is being doled out to campaigns and handed over to politicians. But that is not the way things work. Americans should be able to support their political beliefs through their dollars without arbitrary government-imposed limits.

Money talks, and in politics it's a megaphone on steroids. The money trail is as long as it is deep. After all, cash

Chef Dogan Returns

2010-11-16 10:38:28

MANILA, Philippines - I remember Dogan (pronounced Dohan) as the jolly and friendly Chef in that short-lived Turkish restaurant in Timog where unfortunately, he could not see eye to nike dunk eye with a former Turkish partner. It did take a while for him to resurface and this time in Katipunan Avenue near the corner of Santolan in Project 4 with a restaurant bearing his name.I need not come back several times to review Chef Dogan's restaurant since I already know what to expect in his cooking style, which is rather straightforward. He is very particular about freshness as evident in his showcase of food that greets you as you enter the small dining area. His choice of meats and poultry are always newly processed because nothing will lie when you grill items, especially if you don't cover it with spicy or heavy glazes. So, I had dinner and started with his mixed salad. This was a mixed plate of Mutabel, which is grilled eggplant puree with yogurt and sesame seed tahini paste; humus or chickpea paste with Tahini and olive oil; Babaganuc or eggplant with tomato and chili and a Russian salad of cubed potatoes. We had these dips with some chicken livers sauteed in parsley and garlic (although in the menu it says deep fried) and chicken gizzards. These we had as starters with some Pita bread that Chef Dogan smeared with some tomato puree and oregano that I would consider very Mediterranean in style. He would be the only one Rolex fake doing this style of bread right now and actually highlighted the flavors of the appetizer. For the main courses, I ordered a Karisik Isgara or three sticks of kebab or grilled ground beef shish tavuk or grilled boneless chicken and Kusbasi or beef tenderloin. We had this with more of Dohan's bread and a Tebula or a parsley salad of tomato and burgul. The Tebula is a very fresh and green tasting salad which takes some getting used to and is a classic paired especially on that day with Dogan's homemade yogurt. The house yogurt is not the low-fat thin types one gets in the supermarket. This yogurt is thick and with an excellent mouthfeel and is good to calm down one's palate after taking in some of the homemade chili and garlic sauce on the meats. One can also request for replica jewelry watches grilled tomato and onion and some buttered basmati rice to go with the present menu. For dessert, I tried the sutlac or rice pudding but it did not really excite me as much as the savory dishes. I'd really like to see those syrupy Turkish or Middle Eastern desserts and knowing the Chef, he will come up with these as his restaurant is still quite new. In fact on weekends, he brings out his shawarma machine and has a shawarma roast in his al fresco area. You can email me at
