The hall's fund-raising committee achieved this in just eight months since the start of the fund-raising programme thanks to generous local support, donations and several hefty grant awards.

These came from the Big Lottery's Community Sustainable Energy Programme, North York Moors National Park Authority's Sustainable Development Fund and The Low Carbon Building programme.
Chairman of Fylingdales Village catholic Magnet Bracelets Hall, Paul Johnston, said: "It's been hard work but we are delighted by the grants raised in such a short space of time.
"However, it's taken almost three years in all to get to the stage where we are ready to start physical work on the building."
The hall will be closed completely from the start of September and the end of December to enable all upgrading work to be carried out.
This includes a replica breitling new heating system, installation of insulation and solar panels, a new kitchen and new windows.
Mr Johnston added: "We will soon be looking to promote the use of the upgraded hall to users needing meeting rooms and a venue for weddings, parties and other activities.
"To help us do so we are on the look out for a graphic designer to work with us on a newsletter, hall promotional leaflet and other visual imagery."

Agang of robbers who targeted a vulnerable man have been jailed after they were named and shamed in the press.

Members of the group burst into the home of Kenneth Santillo, who has mental health problems, brandishing a weapon and ordering him replica Versace Handbags to hand over his money. The men fled after snatching Pounds 30, his mobile phone and wallet in October last year.

But when our sister paper the Evening Post ran CCTV stills of the suspects, they chose to do the right thing and handed themselves in.

Sentencing them at Bristol Crown Court yesterday, Judge Simon Darwall-Smith said: "This was a disgraceful incident and something which all members of the public fear.

"He was a vulnerable victim, a man with mental health difficulties, and you were acting as a group or a gang."

The judge handed Davis three years' jail and David Atkins three- and-a-half years. Mark Gosling was jailed for 18 months while Matthew Atkins and Luke Gosling each received 33 months' detention in a young offenders institution.

Kirsty Real, prosecuting, said Mr Santillo was alone at his flat when the front door buzzer sounded and he youth-jerseys let someone in after they offered to sell him cigarettes.

Three men then entered his ralph lauren flat, with David Atkins holding a knife and demanding money. Mr Santillo handed over Pounds 30 and the intruders searched the flat and took his phone and wallet before leaving.

Police found CCTV showing the Gosling brothers at the front door with the others.

Stills were published in the press and the defendants contacted police to say they were involved.

Ramin Pakrooh,, defending Matthew Atkins, said the men had intended a distraction burglary.

Ian Halliday, defending Mark Gosling, said the father-of-six admitted attempted fraud on the basis he thought it would be a con trick and the victim would be sold empty cigarette cartons.

A SCANNING system developed by an Edinburgh-based technology company has been used to find oil buried beneath the American state of Oklahoma.

Oil tycoon Jim McKenny - who set up the US operations of Caithness Petroleum before buying its shale resources - led a syndicate of investors that used the imaging technology to locate the oil and now plan to develop the site.

Adrok managing director Gordon Stove expects the US success to help his company reach its target of doubling turnover this year to GBP1 million. Investors who have backed Adrok include Lonmin chairman Sir John Craven, EADS co-chairman Manfred Bischoff and London-based corporate finance firm Barchester Partners.

Stove said: "Six companies have already signed up to use our technology in the field. They've already tested it against known hydrocarbon and mineral deposits and are now using it for exploration work."

On average, Adrok believes it can cut the cost of drilling by about 70 per cent.

The company's technology sends radio waves and microwaves down into the earth and determines the proportion of absorbed and reflected energy. Adrok can then identify and catalogue the substances below the ground, such as oil, gas or minerals.

In total, the company thinks it can save the oil and gas sector millions of pounds by using its "virtual" drilling technique.

The technique - known as atomic dielectric resonance (ADR) scanning - was developed by Stove's father, Colin, who serves as the company's chairman and scientific director.

Adrok is the third company he has set up, having sold his previous businesses to BAE and an international drilling group.
