Police Chief Richard Biehl unveiled a new website Wednesday, July 28, that allows victims of minor crimes to report incidents to police through the Internet.

The new measure will decrease the wait time for people filing reports and those wanting documents to submit for insurance purposes.

Victims of fraud, harassment, identity theft, property theft, lost property, accidental property damage, vandalism or theft from vehicles can log onto and fill out an incident report. Depending on the type of crime and options selected, an officer might respond to your location, but not always, Biehl said.

"This is another tool that empowers the public to help police solve crimes," Biehl said. "It's also convenient and its savings for us is it frees up officers to handle more pressing matters at that moment."

Those who report crimes online will be given a report number to print off and turn in to an insurance provider, Biehl said. A detective reviews all reports submitted daily and will respond to those that require immediate attention, he said.

Residents can still call (937) 333-COPS (2677) to report crimes, but Biehl hopes more begin using the online reporting process. A 2007 survey of Dayton residents found nearly 57 percent had Internet access.
