'Veteran' Vela shows way for A

ARSENAL 2 WEST BROM 0 ALTHOUGH promising signs emerged from a host of Arsenal's unknown teenagers, it is two of the more reputable names who today emerge from the club's latest Carling Cup lesson with the highest marks.

For the truth is that these young Gunners were labouring badly against a severely weakened Championship side, who played with men for more than minutes, until Carlos Vela made his spectacular introduction.

Jack Wilshere, a veritable veteran of these occasions now aged , had hitherto been the stand-out performer despite playing in an unfamiliar central midfield role and his influence irritated West Brom enough to induce Jerome Thomas to push him in the face, prompting his dismissal and an angry reaction from Baggies manager Roberto Di Matteo, who said his player was reacting to an insult from the Arsenal youngster.

Arsene Wenger instructed his youngsters to mirror the system employed at senior level, with Aaron Ramsey the supposed playmaker. But he was thoroughly outshone by Wilshere, who moved the ball with finesse through jinking solo runs and efficiency in short and sharp passing.

Perhaps we have Perhaps we have come to expect too much from Arsenal on these occasions -- with last year's thrashing of Sheffield United still in the memory -- but the Mexican proved his graduation from this level is virtually complete.

A fine effort from the edge of the box forced Dean Kiely into a save only for Sanchez Watt, perhaps the brightest of the newcomers, to side-foot home the rebound and break the deadlock in the th minute. Vela then took advantage of a mix-up between goalkeeper and Leon Barnett to make it nine minutes later.

Wenger said: "When Vela came on he made a difference because he is dangerous in his control and in his movement. His class gives you something special but he needs more time for the Premier League. But, of course, he is in my plans.

"He can play as a winger, wide left, wide right, he can play central -- he gives you plenty of options. I feel Wilshere did very well. He looked always lively, dangerous in a difficult part of the game. When it was very tight in the first half he looked to find openings, he is not scared. He has something which is very difficult to give to players, no matter how big the game is he takes the ball and takes people on.

"I believe in the future he will be a central player but at the moment in his education it is good that he plays wide right, wide left, central, wherever we need him.

"He still sometimes has a little lack of experience in his decision-making but there is something special there."

Given the average age of the starting XI was just -- the side contained eight teenagers -- there is so much time for these players to improve.

'Unstuff Your Life' shows way

2010-09-15 13:58:42

"UNSTUFF YOUR LIFE! Kick the Clutter Habit and Completely Organize Your Life for Good," by Andrew J. Mellen, Avery, $16

Imagine never again having to turn your house upside down searching for keys. Or wondering where you filed your tax bill or a favorite recipe. Or having a closet stuffed with Sci-Fi & Fantasy DVD clothes but nothing to wear.

If this mental image makes you sigh with longing, the new book "Unstuff Your Life!" might be your ticket. Professional organizer Andrew J. Mellen methodically, logically and humorously walks the reader through a complete reorganization, promising "you will never again find yourself drowning in stuff."

The bite-sized steps toward this nirvana are anchored in two main principles: "Like with Like" -- grouping all similar items together - - and "One Home for Everything" -- deliberately choosing where an item will live when not in use, so you can always find it.

Another key step is simply getting rid of items that aren't used for whatever reason. When tackling the kitchen, for example, Mellen says to throw away or recycle anything that's been broken for more than six months. "Trust me, you don't need it. You haven't used it, and you haven't missed it. Or, Mens Air Shox NZ if you have missed it, you've found some working alternative, so it's still no longer necessary."

With piles of magazines that you haven't gotten around to reading, Mellen advises keeping only three issues prior because "chances are, you'll never be able to get caught up." He unravels the "someday" excuse, "that mythical land where time stands still" and the free time you've been waiting for mysteriously appears. Mellen takes the same approach for projects that have been left unfinished for years -- "You don't need to feel bad about it. Just be clear about where your interests and free time line up and intersect Tory Burch with one another."

For those skeptical about whether the time invested in reorganizing is worth the trouble, Mellen has this wise advice: "As with so many other things, either you're going to pay up front or you're going to pay on the back end for being disorganized, and unfortunately, when you pay on the way out it's always more expensive."

FRENCH backpackers Cecile Daguin and Jerome Bouvier loved Taranaki so much when they visited last year they've returned again - this time as Womad volunteers.

The couple, who hail from Paris and Brittany respectively, heard about the festival from friends but their meagre fruit picking wages couldn't stretch to cover ticket prices so volun- teering was the tiffany silver ring perfect answer.

"We really wanted to go but just couldn't afford the tickets," said Miss Daguin, 27, who like Mr Bouvier, 28, is a video game developer back in France.

The couple, who lent a hand to the festival's marketing team, were part of a 300-strong group of volunteers which helped to make Womad possible.

"Volunteers do everything that our team and the contractors can't," Taranaki Arts Festival Trust marketing and communications manager Lisa McMullan said. Volunteers operate in areas ranging from doing translations for the artists, policing seating in the over 65s areas to staffing rubbish and recycling stations.

Ms McMullan said volunteers did about 18-hours work over the three days in exchange for their passes, a deal most were more than happy with.

Womad places a big emphasis on zero waste and AFS exchange students Amanda Marques, from Brazil, and Argentine Josefina Noseda were on the front line over the weekend.

The 16-year-old Hawera High School students, who have been watches-g in the country only three weeks, took in the Womad experience while picking up litter.

The girls, who said they didn't know the names of many of the bands they had seen, were however really impressed by festival hit Babylon Circus of France.

Anyone interested in volunteering for Womad 2011 can find details and application forms on its website at .

Volunteers are the real stars

2010-09-15 12:57:24

And the real winner is Winnipeg Children's Hospital Foundation

Today, the winner of the CN Canadian Women's Open will get a giant-sized cheque for $337,000.

Pfft. Pocket change.

Because regardless of who prevails after the final putt drops at St. Charles -- be it Michelle Wie or Paula Creamer or Jiyai Shin -- the real winner will be the Winnipeg Children's Hospital Foundation, which stands to earn upwards of $1 million from the Open.

2010 Finals

Just thought you'd like to know. After all, for all the star power orbiting around St. Charles this week, the legacy of the Open, sometimes lost in the glitz of a major international event, isn't going away.

And that would be hundreds of thousands of dollars in fundraising and those hundreds of volunteers, respectively, that make the event worthwhile.

Yeah, I know. A token pat on the back for the volunteers again. But it's true.

And if we're always going to get ragged in this town for mosquito infestations, let the record show that the only thing Winnipeg produces more of than blood-sucking insects, is people who grease the infrastructure for every major sports spectacle this town has ever hosted.

Organizers at St. Charles were looking for 1,400 volunteers. Their quota was filled in March.

There's transportation committees, player services, a posse of 450 marshals. Heck, there's even a volunteer committee in charge of volunteer services.

"When you have an organization of 1,400 people you expect some things to go wrong. But nothing has," noted Ken Matchett, host club volunteer chair. "They're just running like a well-oiled machine. There's nothing to give us a headache now. We're right on track.

"People are out here earlier than they need to be," Matchett added. Womens Air Shox R4 "They're pumped. And they want to work longer than they have to. It's amazing."

And all those worker bees make the Open's world go around, from chauffeuring players to and fro to green-side score reporters to hosting at corporate suites.

"It's usually the people who make the difference," Matchett said. "They feel like they're part of the success of the event, and they should. So the enthusiasm has been building to say the least. By the time you get to Thursday, they were higher than kites."

The other unsung hero of the Open has been the fundraising efforts for the Children's Hospital, where every dollar raised -- from players' donations to wrist bands to silent auctions to Dr. Goodbear sales -- is Nike air jordan dunks matched by CN ()

The Open charity raised $1.7 million last year in Calgary. Organizers in Winnipeg have set a target of $1 million.

"As a golfer, I wanted to see the best women players, but that fact that CN now requires a charity attached to the event was even more important to me," offered Cathy Macatavish, the tournament chair for Golf Canada. "The volunteers feel even better about volunteering."

So, yes, a rich golfer will get even richer today. Then they'll be off to their next event.

The mountain of volunteers and money raised will remain.

"The big winner is the Children's Hospital Foundation by far," concluded Golf C
