Fading hopes for depleted Durh

DURHAM are in danger of ending the season as they began it - with their frontline seam attack crocked and the title hat-trick bid a distant dream.

They departed for Taunton yesterday without Steve Harmison, who has a foot injury, while there is still no news from the England hierarchy about a possible return to action for Graham Onions.

With Callum Thorp yet to recover from his calf injury, Mark Davies and Ben Harmison are in a 13-man squad to face a Somerset team who are only four points behind leaders Nottinghamshire.

Davies played in the first three matches of the season but failed to take a wicket before having a second ankle operation. He was reported to be still suffering some discomfort when he made his return in the second team two weeks ago.

Ben Harmison played in the innings defeat at Trent Bridge and the trip to Kent which followed, but had a top score of 18 and has since played little other than one-day cricket.

Tiffany Necklace Frank-Gehry Durham slipped to fifth at the weekend, Lancashire moving back above them by winning at Canterbury, while Somerset aremounting a very strong challenge for a title they have never won.

In their most recent win, against Essex at Colchester, they totalled 582 runs in their two innings, of which all but 211 came from Marcus Trescothick and James Hildreth.

Trescothick followed a third ball duck in the first innings by making 228 not out off 230 balls in the second, while Hildreth made 84 and 59.

At 25, he has leapt into England contention this summer with 1,302 first-class runs at an average of 68.52.

Durham also play Somerset at home in the final match of the season and as they entertain Nottinghamshire next week they still have a big part to play in the destination of the title.

Whatever happens over the next four days it is unlikely to be anything like a repeat of last season's encounter at Taunton, when Durham amassed 543 then dismissed Somerset for 69 with Onions taking six for 31 after hearing of his first England call-up.

Yorkshire's director of cricket Martyn Moxon says it would be a "disgrace" if the Tykes were not allowed to play a home semi-final in the Clydesdale Bank 40 at one of their preferred venues.

The Tykes have informed the ECB that if they qualify for the last four they would like to stage the match at Scarborough - because of a fixture clash at Headingley which is hosting the one-day international between England and Pakistan.

This would not normally be an issue, but it is thought that Sky Sports is claiming that it cannot screen live sport from North Marine Road.

It could mean that Yorkshire are left without a venue to host the match, if they are to qualify as one of the two best finishes in the group stages to secure home advantage for the last four.

"If we do make it then it would be great to stage the game in Scarborough, " added Moxon. "If the players earn the right to have a home semifinal then it would be a disgrace if they could not have a home semi-final."

Failed Alzheimer's trials shif

2010-09-07 10:46:57

VIENNA -- Alzheimer's drug researchers served up a string of bad news at the International Conference on Alzheimer's Disease, presenting one failed trial after another.

None of these strategies tested--blocking amyloid, improving insulin sensitivity in the brain, or even doubling up on agents that improve synaptic signalling--was able to alter the steady rate of cognitive and functional decline in patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's, also among the failures were the omega-3 fatty acid studies.

"We are again left to wonder whether clues from epidemiology are more related to delaying or protective factors rather than factors related to progression of established disease," said Dr. Samuel Gandy, Mount Sinai Professor of Alzheimer's Disease Research at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York.

Instead of searching for the compound that will alter the so-far inevitable decline seen in Alzheimer's, the key will probably be preventing the disease from taking hold in the first place, he said in an interview.

Among the failures was a phase II placebo-controlled trial of rosiglitazone that showed no benefit on cognition in a group of 553 patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's.

Hublot Watch Replica

The 24-week trial, sponsored by GlaxoSmithKlinc, randomized the patients (mean age 72 years) to placebo, a positive control group of donepezil 10 mg/day, or one of two rosiglitazone doses (2 mg or 8 mg daily). The extended-release formulation was an experimental one, and not the Food and Drug Administration-approved Avandia, Dr. Michael Gold said at the meeting.

The study examined each treatment's effect in the overall cohort, on those who were apolipoprotein E e4 (APOE e4) negative, and all subjects except those homozygous for the high-risk gene. The primary end points were changes in the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-cognitive domain (ADAS-cog) and Clinicians' Interview-Based Impression of Change plus Caregiver Input (CIBIC-plus).

At 24 weeks, neither of the rosiglitazone doses was significantly different from placebo in either cognitive assessment for any of the populations. But in the overall population and in the group that included everyone except the APOE e4 homozygous carriers, CIBIC scores were significantly better for those on donepezil than for those taking placebo.

Since that finding had not been adjusted for covariates, "I don't think it's anything we can hang our hats on," said Dr. Gold, global clinical vice president of neurology at GlaxoSmithKline, Durham, N.C.

Dr. Gordon Wilcock reported another failed phase III trial for tarenflurbil, this one conducted in the United States, Canada, and Western Europe. In 2008, tarenflurbil, a selective amyloid-lowering agent, failed its highly anticipated phase III U.S. trial.

"With two failed phase III trials, tarenflurbil has killed itself off completely," Dr. Wilcock, of the University of Oxford (England), said at the meeting.

Tarenflurbil was the first gamma secretase modulator to be tested in a phase III trial. This class of drug is thought to reduce the levels of toxic amyloid beta ([AB.sub.42]) in the brain by changing the point at which the enzyme gamma secretase cuts the amyloid precursor lace wigs protein, shifting the ratio to less of the toxic [AB.sub.42] and more of the less-toxic [AB.sub.40].

The most recent trial failed to show statistically signi

Constantine Cuts 46 Feet (14.0

2010-09-06 10:17:39

Constantine Metal Resources Ltd. (TSX VENTURE: CEM) (the "Company") is pleased to announce partial analytical results for 1 drill hole at the ongoing 2007 drilling program on its polymetallic massive sulphide Palmer project near Haines, Alaska. The 2007 Palmer drilling program started in late July and to date more than 6000 ft (greater than 1800m) of drilling has been completed in 6 holes. Partial assay results have been received for hole CMR07-07; all other assay results are pending.

Hole CMR07-07 intersected 45.90 ft (14.0m) of 3.79% copper, 7.24% zinc, 0.37 g/t gold, 47 g/t silver. The intersection can be divided into an upper zinc zone; 14.30 ft (4.4m) - 13.60% zinc, 0.65% copper, 0.15 g/t gold, 18 g/t silver and a contiguous underlying copper zone; 31.60 ft (9.6m) 5.22% copper, 4.36% zinc, 0.47 g/t gold, 60 g/t silver. The estimated true width of the intersection is approximately 85-90% of the core length. The intersection is on the Glacier Creek prospect and is located in the footwall to the RW Zone at base of the RW rhyolite. It represents a third stacked high grade mineralized horizon (RW2) that can be tested with surface drilling.

The CMR07-07 high grade intersection is located 230 ft (70m) west of the 2006 intersection in CMR06-01 (16.8 ft (5.12m) of 10.86% zinc, 0.13% Pb, 0.23% copper, 0.13 g/t gold and 44.4 g/t silver) and about 230 ft (70m) east of a 36 ft (11m) interval of rhyolite hosted massive pyrite stringers at the base of the RW horizon (0.81% zinc and 0.15% copper) in CMR06-03. Two drill holes were completed from the CMR07-07 drill site in 2007. The second hole (CMR07-08) intersected the same mineralized watches m horizon as CMR07-07, in an 83 ft (25.3m) wide zone of leached barite and oxidized sulphides. This intercept is approximately 165 ft (50 m) updip from the CMR07-07 intercept towards the oxidized surface exposure of the zone. Assays for the CMR-07-08 intercept are pending.

The RW and the RW2 zones are separated by the RW rhyolite that varies from 0 to a maximum indicated thickness of 180 ft (55m). In the absence of the RW rhyolite, the RW and RW2 zones become a single sulphide horizon which appears to be the case with the 2006 intersection in CMR06-01. The RW and RW2 zones remain open to the east and west and down dip to the northwest and northeast.

At the Cap prospect target, two holes (aggregate of 2204 ft) were drilled to test for strike extensions and metal zonation relative to historic (pre-Constantine) drill intercepts of 76.1 ft (23.2m) in Cap-01 of 134 ppm silver (3.91 oz/t), 0.24% zinc, 0.16% Pb and 297.2 ft (90.6m) in RMC98-01 of 31 ppm silver (0.90 oz/t), that includes 35.8 ft (10.9m) of 62 ppm silver (1.81 oz/t), 0.19 ppm gold, 0.21% zinc. The Constantine holes (CMR07-04 and CMR07-05) indicate continuity of mineralization and alteration.

The remaining four, 2007 holes completed to date (including CMR07-07 and CMR07-08 discussed above) are located at the Glacier Creek prospect, testing the RW (and RW2), Main and South Wall targets. The drill is currently operating at a lower elevation drill site, 1640 ft (500m) east of the CMR07-07 drill pad where it is testing the RW-RW2, Main zone and South Wall horizons. One hole has been completed at this site (CMR07-09) and a second hole (CMR07-10) is in progress. CMR07-10 is expected to be the final hole of the 2007 drill program.

Garfield MacVeigh, President and CEO, commented, "The mineralized zones encountered to date continue to demonstrate the exciting potential of the project. The latest holes have indicated the presence of a thick zone of mineralization with good grade and continue to build and confirm the geological interpretation. There are many obvious step-out hol

Cam's just too quick on draw

2010-09-06 09:34:51

SOMEONE should perhaps buy our new Prime Minister a cowboy hat, blue jeans and a good holster. Nothing to do with the unkind taunts about the Brokeback Coalition.

But because David Cameron Flat leather sandals has developed a rather endearing habit of shooting from the hip.

Flat leather sandals

In the firing line in the last fortnight have been Israel for turning Gaza into a "prison camp". And then Pakistan, which he virtually accused of exporting terror.

Flat leather sandals

Whether they're deserving targets or not, he should be given credit for saying what he thinks and then standing by his words.

But last week he took aim and pulled the trigger, only to see the pistol backfire.

I am not talking about his gaffe about a nuclear Iran, because that is what it was... a mistake, a slip of the tongue.

No, more incendiary domestically were his remarks about council housing.

He was proposing fixedterm lettings of five or 10 years instead of the current promise that a council home is for life.

His point was that when family cicumstances change or children leave home, tenants could move to smaller accommodation freeing up the bigger house for those in greater need.

Critics have been quick to point out that it flies in the face of everything the Tories have been saying about the socalled Big Society and tackling petty crime.

The Conservatives have been looking to communities to start helping themselves more, to try to stamp out yobbish behaviour and to improve their own neighbourhoods.

But many of the real social problems are on council estates and to improve things you need families to feel they belong, to feel they have security of tenure and to believe they're making a home for life.

Only then will they feel a sense of community and be able to get together to act.

If tenancies are often changing, with different people moving in and out and the population of an estate is transient, then the chances are it will have the opposite effect and lead to ghettoes and more problems.

Housing experts say the estates with the highest levels of social problems tend to have an unusually high turnover of tenants.

Housing swaps, where council tenants will be able to switch their homes with others who live elsewhere, is a policy that does work. But Mr Cameron's proposals take things a good deal further.

In short, the idea needs thinking through. The obvious answer is to build more social housing. But the spending cuts make that very unlikely.

The Lib Dems are already up in arms and disowning the policy.

They say no such plan was ever discussed by the coalition. And it is just Christian louboutin flats the sort of issue that will expose the divisions everyone knows are there. David Cameron's interests at the moment lie in keeping the Government together. So now is probably not the time to pick a fight over an issue as delicate as social housing.

He should carry on shooting from the hip. It's quiChristian Louboutin Shoes
