Disappointment at finally conc

Torquay United manager Paul Buckle revealed details of a key moment in the dressing room after Port Vale had finally ended Torquay United's record defensive run with Anthony Griffiths' 37th- minute goal on Saturday.

It pulled Vale back to 2-1 down at the interval, but that was as good as it got for the hosts. The final score remained unchanged. Buckle said: "Of course it was disappointing to concede at last. But at half-time I asked the players to put their drinks down and give themselves a round of applause.

"We had to draw a line under it, and concentrate on winning the match. If the record had to go, it needed a good goal to do it, and it was a great strike by Griffiths.

"We started the game brilliantly.

I thought we were in control. Zebs [Chris Zebroski] did ever so well for the penalty. It's isn't easy when you have missed one, but Nicky Wroe is our captain, and he stuck it away.

"We played very well, and we needed to. After going 2-0 up, Elliot Benyon didn't look offside to me for 3-0, but there were a lot of strange decisions today.

"I thought Vale started the second half well, but we didn't let them in. We've got lots of things we can do from the bench, which is very important to us and we work hard on it."

Buckle picked out one of yvessaint laurent his substitutes for special praise. "Eunan O'Kane is a wonderful young player," he said. "I wanted an extra body in midfield, and for us to play our way out. Eunan gave us what was required. I really fancied him to score, when he showed great flair and individual skill on that run."

Vale manager Micky Adams refused to claim a hangover from last Wednesday's 6-0 Carling Cup defeat at Premier League Fulham.

"I'm not making excuses on the back of the midweek defeat," he said.

"I will sit here and defend my players all day, but individually some of the players in the last two games have been very average.

"We weren't at full pelt. "I am disappointed, of course I am, but I think we should give credit to Torquay.

"Our start lacked intensity and passion. We have to show people we mean business.

"We have got to be better."
